Calling all Elephant lovers! A unique opportunity to live and work on a beautifully located elephant park.
Oyster can arrange for you to join a team of committed conservationists at an elephant park in South Africa. Beside being home to a family of twelve resident elephants the park aims to provide a temporary home for elephants in need while more permanent homes are being found. The elephants can roam freely, happily and safely in the extensive park, recovering from any stress or trauma. While they are there, staff and other experts take the opportunity to research and monitor their behaviour. They also conduct educational tours, so that the public can understand more about these beautiful animals and the threats they face from poaching and loss of habitat. You would get involved in all these activities and quickly feel part of the team.
As a volunteer at the park, you would get involved in feeding and caring for the animals, as well as helping with educational and research work. Typical tasks would include:
* Preparing food and milk bottles (for baby elephants)
* Accompanying and helping the guides during their daily tours
* Assisting with vet care
* Doing research projects, following and observing the elephants and recording their behaviour, taking samples of dung and plants etc.
* Producing educational or advertising material (e.g. leaflets or presentations)
* Helping with maintenance work around the park
Accommodation and linen are provided. Food is not provided but is bought cheaply locally. Oyster can arrange flights and transport to Plettenburg bay (at extra cost).
Cost from £739 for 2 weeks.
Please be aware that you will not be paid for this placement. It is undertaken purely on a voluntary basis. No help can be offered towards the cost of this placement. We thank you for your interest.
