The Project
Volunteer in South Africa and help to rescue and rehabilitate “Happy Feet” Penguins. As a volunteer you will have the opportunity get hands on care work and learn about the life cycle and conservation of the African Penguin which unfortunately, is still an endangered species in the continent. This project works hard to nurture and rescue penguins and other sea birds in distress from pollution and climate change with a focus on rehabilitating them to a level where they are able to be released back into the wild. As a volunteer you will be able to learn about important conservation methods, actively partake in the penguins and other sea birds recovery process and you may even get the chance to go on a release trip to Robben Island – home to one of the largest colonies of the African Penguin in the world.

Role of the volunteer
Volunteers must be prepared to work 5 days a week including some weekends as you will work according to shift schedule arranged by your co-ordinator once you start your project. As a volunteer, you will get involved in the day to day care of seabirds and penguins including: washing off the oil, feeding them fish and cleaning their swimming pools and bird pens. You will also be taught how to catch, handle, feed, tube and administer medication to a variety of different seabirds as well as assisting in the Intensive Care Unit when required.
